Soon it will be time for pink euphoria to hit the country and for trees to be transformed into pink statements. CANSA along with Pink Trees for Pauline continues to make a difference in the needs of cancer communities in South Africa. Every year during October numerous towns countrywide use hundreds of metres of pink material to transform their trees into pink masterpieces. These visual statements ring the message of hope for many cancer survivors. Apart from purchasing the pink material at R30 per metre you can also buy colourful headscarves as part of the #doekwithadifference campaign, thereby raising awareness and brightening your own life as well as the life of others. Furthermore, you can also support Pink Trees by purchasing unique matching hoop earrings and soft colourful bracelets for R50, or stainless-steel earrings for R100 per pair…

CANSA’s Advocacy team regularly lobbies and engages with the Departments of Health and aims to establish partnerships with key National and Provincial stakeholders. CANSA advocates for the training of Primary Health Professional Care Workers on the top five cancers for men and women prevalent in SA. This will help with the early detection of cancer in the Primary Health settings and early access to cancer treatment. The focus is mainly with the Provincial Departments of Health, and our CANSA Service team implement the activities in the provinces. To date, four Provincial Departments of Health have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CANSA: Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga. Work continues to engage with the remaining provinces…

In June, as part of International Cancer Survivors’ month, CANSA celebrates all cancer survivors and salutes their perseverance, with the focus on children, teens, young adults and parents or guardians. Each cancer diagnosis can impact a patient and their loved ones negatively, and CANSA provides the practical and emotional support they need throughout cancer treatment. Receiving a diagnosis as an adult is difficult, but even more so when it’s a child or teenager and it is especially hard on parents of paediatric patients. When a child or teenager is diagnosed with cancer, CANSA TLC offers support to sustain paediatric patients, parents and loved ones as they face their worst fear…

Can you help? We would love to be able to provide our volunteers with the tools they need to operate within their communities – be it with a laptop, smartphone, training and upskilling on computer software and social media platforms or assistance with mobile data so that they can, optimally, continue with their work for CANSA. We’re operating with a business model that relies on technology and it’s important for volunteers to be able to attend meetings, training, and supervision sessions online. So, we appeal to the public and corporates and invite them to show their community spirit by helping us with donations and sponsorships of these items to keep our volunteers active in the communities where they work…

No matter the level of “lockdown,” evidence shows that people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are at higher risk of severe complication if they contract COVID-19. As South Africa prepares to move to lockdown “light” at level 3, people living with NCDs (PLWNCDs) need to remain vigilant. CANSA, with input from the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA, Diabetes SA, National Kidney Foundation, Dementia SA and Education for Health Africa, has compiled infographics covering information to assist the public affected by non-communicable diseases and cancer…
