Research Funding Streams
CANSA provides funding for cancer research projects and invites researchers in the field of cancer to submit grant applications through the following funding streams:
Larger-Scale Research Funding Stream
This funding stream supports high-impact, investigator-led cancer research undertaken by MBChB- and PhD-level researchers at accredited South African universities and research organisations.
Projects focus on advancing scientific knowledge, clinical practice, and innovation across the cancer continuum, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and supportive care. These are typically larger-scale studies requiring strong methodological design, institutional support, and experienced research leadership.
Funding is awarded based on scientific merit, feasibility, and potential impact, with emphasis on generating peer-reviewed publications and evidence that can inform policy and practice.

Please note: No funding call was issued in 2026 for funding commencing in 2027.
Applied Research Funding Stream
CANSA’s Applied Research Funding Stream supports smaller-scale, applied research projects aligned with CANSA’s operational priorities and advocacy initiatives. These projects often originate within CANSA and are conducted in collaboration with researchers at accredited South African research institutions.
Funding is capped at R60 000 per project per annum and supports direct research costs, excluding postgraduate tuition fees. The programme aims to support emerging and early-career researchers while strengthening evidence-based cancer prevention, early detection, patient support, and survivorship initiatives in South Africa.
CANSA will periodically issue targeted calls for proposals under this funding stream.
