Larger-Scale Research Projects
CANSA currently funds and supports four cancer research projects at universities and research institutions across South Africa. These projects focus on areas including epidemiology, early diagnosis, cancer risk reduction, and optimising patient care.
The purpose of this funding is to support high-quality cancer research that advances cancer management and improves outcomes for some of the most common cancers affecting South Africans. These projects are supported through CANSA’s Larger-Scale Research funding stream.
CANSA is one of the few publicly funded organisations in South Africa with sustainable funding dedicated to cancer research and remains one of the country’s leading supporters of independent cancer research.

Prof Michael Kew
CANSA-funded research has produced significant discoveries, including the identification of Hepatitis B infection as a major risk factor for liver cancer. This important finding contributed to the development of a vaccine that has since been incorporated into South Africa’s government infant immunisation programme. As a result, many lives are saved through the prevention of liver cancer associated with Hepatitis B infection.
