Applied Cancer Research Funding Stream

The Applied Cancer Research funding stream supports small-scale, high-impact research projects developed in collaboration with accredited South African universities and research institutions.

Projects must align with CANSA’s operational priorities and generate actionable evidence to improve cancer-related outcomes, services, and patient support initiatives in South Africa.


Research Focus Areas

Projects may focus on:

  • Cancer prevention and risk reduction, including environmental and lifestyle factors
  • Early detection and help-seeking behaviour
  • Patient support, survivorship, and care optimisation
  • Improving recognition of cancer signs and symptoms
  • Strengthening pathways to cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • CANSA programme and service improvement initiatives

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be registered at an accredited South African tertiary or research institution
  • Be postgraduate students (Master’s, MPH, PhD) or postdoctoral researchers
  • Have supervisor support (signed endorsement required)
  • Obtain institutional ethics approval prior to project commencement

Funding

  • Maximum funding: R60 000 per project per annum
  • Funding covers direct research costs only
  • Tuition fees are excluded
  • Applications exceeding R60 000 require a detailed motivation

Deliverables

All funded projects must produce:

  • A research translation output (policy brief, infographic, or lay summary)
  • A presentation to CANSA
  • At least one peer-reviewed publication
  • Progress reports every 6 months

  • Completed CANSA application form
  • Supervisor endorsement or signature
