New CANSA-Funded Type A Research Projects

We are pleased to announce two new CANSA-funded Type A research projects commencing on 1 April 2026. These projects are led by outstanding South African researchers whose work advances knowledge, supports innovation, and strengthens cancer research in South Africa.

We are honoured to partner with leading scientists whose expertise plays a vital role in expanding our understanding of cancer and improving outcomes for affected communities.

Dr June Fabian

Dr June Fabian

Dr June Fabian (University of the Witwatersrand)

Principal Investigator – CRC-GEN Study
Project Title: Molecular Causes of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancers in South Africans of African Ancestry
Project Start Date: 1 April 2026

We are pleased to welcome Dr Fabian as a key research leader collaborating with CANSA on the colorectal cancer (CRC)-GEN study. With expertise in molecular oncology, Dr Fabian leads this important research project investigating the underlying biological factors contributing to early-onset colorectal cancer among South Africans of African ancestry.

Under her guidance, the CRC-GEN study aims to uncover molecular patterns that may help inform future prevention strategies, improve early detection, and support more effective treatments for early-onset colorectal cancer patients. CANSA is proud to support and share insights from this work with communities and health professionals. Read more…

Dr Cari van Schalkwyk

Dr Cari van Schalkwyk

Dr Cari van Schalkwyk (Stellenbosch University)

Lead Researcher – HPV Vaccine Study
Project Title: Modelling Preferred HPV Therapeutic Vaccine Characteristics in South Africa
Project Start Date: 1 April 2026

We are equally honoured to welcome Dr van Schalkwyk as a research collaborator working on the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine modelling project. This study explores preferences and optimal characteristics for therapeutic HPV vaccines in the South African context – research that could influence future vaccine development and implementation strategies.

Dr van Schalkwyk’s work brings together epidemiology, health systems research, and community engagement to model vaccine features that align with local needs and feasibility. CANSA supports this innovative research with the shared goal of reducing the burden of HPV-related cancers. Read more…

About Our Research Partnerships

CANSA partners with researchers across South Africa to advance cancer prevention, early detection, and care. Through these collaborations, we support and inform communities, build local research capacity, and fund impactful studies through Type A, B, and C grants. By sharing findings on accessible platforms, we ensure research reaches the public, drives advocacy, and guides improvements across the cancer care continuum.

For more information on these studies, or to learn how to participate where applicable, please explore here or contact us at research@cansa.org.za.
