The CANSA Smart Choice programme is part of ongoing efforts by CANSA to lower exposure to cancer-causing agents and other risk factors associated with cancer development. CANSA aims to promote a smart, balanced, lifestyle using the CANSA Smart Choice Seal as a tool to assist the public in making healthier informed choices.
Although viewed as a non-traditional form of exercise, Nia is an internationally acclaimed cardiovascular mind-body movement practice taught in more than 45 countries worldwide. As the first practice to combine martial arts, dance arts, and healing arts, Nia has fundamentally changed people’s lives with its evolutionary approach to fitness and wellness.
“At Nia, we believe every person can discover, explore, unleash, and enhance their individual potential to live a healthy and meaningful life by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. Nia is based on the intelligent design of the body. Each workout combines mindfulness and dynamic movement – leaving you energised, mentally clear, and emotionally balanced,” says Debbie Rosas, co-founder, and creator of Nia.
Kudzai Nyaruve, CANSA’s Seal of Recognition Coordinator adds that “We’re pleased to add Nia to our list of CANSA Smart Choice partners. Research shows that for most people exercise is safe and helpful before, during, and after cancer treatment. It can help improve your quality of life as well as the energy you have to do the things you like. Physical activity may also help you cope with side effects of treatment and possibly decrease your risk of new cancers in the future.”
Nia is the original barefoot, joy, workout offering several benefits such as increased confidence, enhanced vitality, mental clarity, emotional release, improved heart health, and elevated mood. It’s also known to reduce stress and anxiety, increase strength, mobility, and flexibility as well as reduce pain.
“One of Nia’s main appeals is that it benefits people of all ages and fitness levels and can be tailored to specialty populations such as adolescents, elite athletes, the elderly, and those affected by disease or illness,” Steyn further explains.
Nia is practiced in studios across South Africa. To find a teacher in your area, or to train to become a Nia teacher, visit niaafrica.
