The model established by Professor Anna-Mart Engelbrecht, and the related findings, have presented a novel and unique platform for further research into the remarkable phenomenon of chemotherapeutic intervention and particularly the role of autophagy therein and is featured in her booklet with the title Novel Strategies in Chemotherapeutic Intervention. The researchers demonstrated that autophagy protected cancer cells from the stressful microenvironment of hypoxia and starvation.
