Podcast: On the CANSA Couch – Alcohol and Cancer – the Link Everyone Should Know

Join On the CANSA Couch listeners as we discuss the link between alcohol and cancer, that many people may not be aware of.

In fact, alcohol has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there’s strong scientific evidence that it causes cancer in humans.

Yet drinking is part of many of our SA celebrations, sporting events and social gatherings.

CANSA’s Seal of Recognition Manager, Kudzai Nyaruve, and Registered Dietician, Megan Pentz-Kluyts, are joined by guest speaker, Professor Susan Goldstein who has a special interest in research-based evidence being used to inform policy changes in several areas, including commercial determinants of health, in particular alcohol.

Professor Goldstein explains the scientific evidence behind classifying alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen.

Professor Susan Goldstein is a public health medicine specialist and currently the Managing Director, SAMRC / Wits Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science – PRICELESS SA.

She has a special interest in research, both qualitative and quantitative, and using evidence to inform policy in the topic areas of Health Promotion, NCDs, Immunization, and the Commercial Determinants of Health in particular alcohol.

She is currently the Managing Director of the SAMRC/WITS Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science PRICELESS SA. She has published widely in the field of public health.

She sits on the Board for the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance.

Prior to joining the Wits School of Public Health she worked at the Soul City Institute for Social Justice and was involved in research for the Soul City Series as well as the Soul Buddyz series.

She was chair of the South African AIDS conference in 2017 and on the steering committee for the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication Summit in 2022.
