CANSA Service Spotlight – Lorraine Mamitwa (CANSA TLC Nicus Lodge Assistant)
Tell us about yourself…
I am Lorraine Mamitwa and I like to work with people.
What position are you in at CANSA?
I am a TLC assistant at CANSA Nicus Lodge, Pretoria.
How long have you been working for CANSA?
I started working for CANSA in 2017.
What do you like most about your position?
I like to assist the people and guide them when they come to the lodge. I also enjoy cooking and preparing of meals. The new parents have lots of questions and it feels good to assist them.
What do you find the most difficult about your position?
It is hard when the children pass away, because we get to know them.
What inspires you?
To motivate the mothers and see how they change while their children are in the ward. Every week to continue to have sessions with the moms. It it is good to talk to them.
Take us through a typical work day in your life…
Every day is different. Parents come at all times to book in or out of the lodge. At any time there may be a food collection or someone crying that is in need of comfort.
Besides talking to the mothers and encouraging them I also see that the lodge is clean, laundry done and meals are ready for those who eat there.
I hand out food parcels or clothing when it is needed.
I like the fact that every day is different, most of the time me and the rest of the TLC team are dealing with a lot, because a things tend to happen at once.
Tell us about a time when an interaction with a patient or the public made an impression on you…
There is a grandma coming to us for some time now, who I really looked up to because she had so much wisdom and guides and teaches the other moms. She always encourages the moms to calm down. She herself is always the same and very calm.
