CANSA Launches the FLOD Game to Help Educators Screen for Childhood Cancer through Play

The first pilot of the FLOD card game was held at the Kabega Primary School in Gqeberha towards the end of July 2025. Educators and leader volunteers assisted with introducing the game to primary school learners in the school hall.

FLOD is an innovation of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and its Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) programme which supports children, teens and young adults with cancer and their loved ones. TLC also educates regarding the symptoms of cancer affecting youth to promote early detection of cancer. It is hoped that this enjoyable game will help educators spot possible signs of cancer early and that they will be able to ask parents or guardians to go for a medical check up, as many children in South Africa are not diagnosed timeously or at all.

Learners sat in circles and educators showed them the cards.

Learners then responded to instructions on the card.

Who is FLOD?

FLOD’s a charming furry, friendly monster who loves to interact with children – and they love him.

Educators are invited to order a FLOD (First Line of Defence) card pack and get their learners to participate in fun activities…

The card game helps educators play an important role in the early detection of childhood cancer.
