CANSA Clinic goes Mobile in uThungulu
The Zululand Observer recently reported that the CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Mobile Clinic Unit is back in Zululand and is already being put to work in remote rural areas of uThungulu. This valuable resource is shared between the five CANSA offices in KZN and is therefore available to the uThungulu office for only three months of the year.
The service offered by CANSA personnel (Maureen Dlamini and Sr Eileen Bozas) who travel with this unit includes PAP smears, breast examinations, and finger-prick Prostate-Specific-Antigen (PSA) tests for men. Says Ms Dlamini: “Many people… believe that cancer only affects certain ethnic groups and is not a ‘black disease’. Education is essential to change these beliefs so that we are able to catch cancer while it is still in the early stages.”
Money raised in the uThungulu region is utilized to support CANSA’s health programmes in this area, one of which is the costs to run and maintain this very valuable Mobile Unit.
