Start the Conversation…
CANSA and Old Mutual Personal Finance have joined forces to help South Africans better understand the wider financial impact of severe illness and encourage important conversations about financial preparedness before they become urgent.
The partnership brings together CANSA’s experience supporting people and families affected by cancer with Old Mutual Personal Finance’s focus on helping people understand their financial needs and prepare for life’s unexpected changes.
At the heart of the partnership is a shared belief: a severe illness can change more than your health.
A diagnosis can bring an immediate focus on treatment and recovery, but everyday life continues. Household expenses still need to be managed, children still need to be cared for, and family responsibilities don’t simply disappear. Depending on someone’s circumstances, recovery may also mean time away from work and additional expenses.
This is why CANSA and Old Mutual Personal Finance believe that conversations about severe illness should extend beyond health to include financial preparedness.
Starting conversations before they become urgent
Through the partnership, CANSA and Old Mutual Personal Finance will bring these conversations to South Africans through educational content, real-life experiences, expert conversations and engagement opportunities.
The aim is to help people ask practical questions about their own circumstances:
If I became severely ill, what financial commitments would continue? What expenses might fall outside my medical aid? How long could my savings support me? Who else would be financially affected? And do I understand the financial protection I already have?
These are not always easy questions to answer. But having the conversation before you need the answers can help you better understand how financially prepared you are.
The partnership builds on Old Mutual Personal Finance’s belief that Change Happens with the Right Conversation, and CANSA’s commitment to education, awareness and support for people affected by cancer.

Giving back through the partnership
Alongside raising awareness and encouraging greater financial preparedness, the partnership also creates an opportunity for Old Mutual Personal Finance to give back and support CANSA’s work.
During the campaign period, Old Mutual Personal Finance will donate R100 to CANSA for every qualifying new Severe Illness policy taken up, up to a total contribution of R100,000.
The contribution forms part of Old Mutual Personal Finance’s broader support of CANSA and the work it does for people and communities affected by cancer.
A conversation that matters
For CANSA and Old Mutual Personal Finance, the partnership is ultimately about helping people think about something that can be easy to put off when life is going well.
Financial preparedness is not about expecting a severe illness to happen. It’s about understanding what you already have in place, considering how your finances could be affected if life changed unexpectedly and knowing which questions are worth asking.
You don’t need to have all the answers to begin.
Start with the questions. Start the conversation.
