CANSA as Part of SANCD Highlighting Increased Risk of Cancer due to Obesity
6 June 2017 – It’s great to see our Advocacy team actively involved with lowering the risk of cancer. Our Head of Research, Dr Melissa Wallace, as part of the South African Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance (SA NCD Alliance) is presenting this morning in Cape Town to the Standing Committee on Finance, with the Portfolio Committee on health – Health Promotion on Sugary Beverages .
Research indicates that overweight or obesity increases the risk for at least 10 cancers including cancers of the bowel, breast, gallbladder, prostate, kidney, liver, oesophagus, ovaries, pancreas and uterus.
CANSA, as part of the South African NCD Alliance, supports the indirect taxation on sugar sweetened beverages with the aim of reducing their consumption.
Dr Wallace will be highlighting the implications of obesity contributing to the high incidences of various cancers as well as highlighting the associated financial implications.
