CANSA to Give Free Clinical Breast Examinations at 14th Annual iThemba Walkathon

Johannesburg – Participating women will have the opportunity to undergo a free Clinical Breast Examination by CANSA at registration on the 17th and 18th of October as well as at the annual iThemba Walkathon scheduled for Sunday, 20 October at Marks Park. CANSA will have two mobile health clinics operated by qualified nurses to take participants through a full assessment as well as refer them to the relevant doctors or hospitals where a participant shows any of the signs or symptoms of breast cancer. The assessment will highlight risk factors as well as ways to help minimise them. “This initiative perfectly aligns to our breast cancer promise to reach as many women as possible with a view to significantly increasing early detection among South African women. This is key to overcoming breast cancer.,” says Bridget Bhengu, Corporate Communications Director at Avon Justine.

Once the iThemba Walkathon is done, this partnership is continuing to impact lives. In 2018/19, though funding from the iThemba Walkathon, CANSA was able to reach 10 000 women with Free Clinical Breast Examinations. “It is only through our generous partners like Avon Justine that CANSA is able to run successful educational and early detection programmes in our communities. Together, we are able to give people hope and better treatment outcomes,” says Gerda Strauss, CANSA’s Head of Service Delivery.

In addition to the mobile health clinics, CANSA will activate their renowned Shavathon on the day enabling participants to either shave their hair or colour it for a nominal fee in support of the organisation. This is a fun activity which can also be very emotional as a lot of the iThemba Walkathon participants have been affected by breast cancer personally or know someone close to them who has.

With over 26 000 participants in 2018, the iThemba Walkathon is the largest breast cancer awareness event in the Avon world which consists of over 50 countries. The 2019 edition promises to be the best with exciting live performances to be announced in the coming weeks. Registrations are open on with tickets costing just R175 per adult and R115 per child. Registrations can also be made on printed entry forms obtainable from participating Sportsman Warehouse stores.
